. from a distance this coupelooks to be a porsche or jaguar. it is not.obviously. the mercedes-benz amg gt s is, if you couldn'ttell, a rapid transit system built for two.long of hood and heritage design, itreplaces the gull-winged sls that had less tech and costsome 70 grand more. making the gt s abargain, i suppose. if you have a spare $131,000lying around you
can buy a base model gt s. astested, this one is $171,000. you're in thatfar might as well finance the rest) those extras include fade freecarbon ceramic brakes, all kinds ofcarbon fiber trim and structural bits, plus an upgraded interior packagethat looks for all the world to be fromlord vader's tie fighter. i doubt he's ayellow guy though.
skip the solarbeam paint tosave nearly 10 grand. mercedes is gunning for porsche911 and audi r8 though they have engines inback. this 4-liter 8-cylinder has twoturbos nestled in the v. martin, who handassembled it, would explain the lack of atraditional oil pan allowed engineers to drop the engine 2inches for a lower center of gravity. isn'tthe sound of 503 horsepower and 479pound-feet of torque
lovely? it's variable. drivemodes tailor performance, "race"being a bit much for grocery getting.engine mounts are computer controlled forless vibration. using the shifter? it's alittle bit of a reach back, a bit awkward. the rear-mounted 7-speeddual-clutch transmission delivers this sturm und drangto the back wheels. the driveshaft iscarbon fiber.
mercedes claims 0-60 sprintshappen in 3.7 seconds seems like they're beingconservative. oh, look how fast i'm going... only track time can reveal thiscars lofty performance, it cruises withoutdrama at double the speed limit. don'task me how i know. certainly i didn't testthe top speed claim of 193 miles anhour. gt s
does not use trendy electricpower steering. it's hydraulic and it's awesome. one thing you'll notice right away, the steering isincredible direct, without being squirrelly. the faster it goes, the morecapable gt s seems to become. aerodynamicsdeploy automatically at speeds over 75miles an hour. i think i'm going to keep thatdown.
i don't need to attract anymore attention to myself... gas mileage? well it's awful ofcourse. but if that's your concern this isclearly not your car. you can probably tell from thelevel of my voice, this is not as quietas an s class. it's not as cushy of a rideeither. that should come as nosurprise. even in comfort mode, i'm notsure i'd want to travel long distance in thiscar.
you'd certainly arrive quicklythough. remember, there are carbonceramic brakes. whoa. they willstop you all day long. the cabin is snug for a couple, the panoramic glass roof would brightenthings up. seats are infinitely adjustable sothere's no issue there. a wonderfulburmester audio system is standard, though theengine sounds even better. being amercedes, the comand user interface is here, there's all
sorts of ways to enter data, including handwriting. not just an ultra highperformance machine, gt s is also a practicalhatchback. kind of. sort of. get the security shade out ofthe way and there's room enough for justthree packs of the two-ply. owners willprobably carry suitcases i'm guessing. the folks at mercedes say thatamg
is becoming more involved andimportant. for one thing, the divisiondraws a younger and more affluent group. thereare rumors that it will have somewhatunique products, not just performance variants.we know amg as a tuning division butthese days it is very involved with theproducts as they are being conceived. there's a higher velocity gt rmodel
on the way if this is notpowerful enough. for those who just love the waythe aluminum panels seem to be poured overthe aluminum space frame chassis, a standardgt will start at $113,000. and i'll assume it's hardly pokey.considering its looks and performance, themercedes-benz amg gt s should fast become aclassic. one cool feature about the twinturbo
engine, the cylinder liners usea proprietary material called nanoslide. itmakes them twice as hard as standard cast-ironliners and reduces friction. it's used inmercedes formula 1 engines. gt s is alsoavailable with those dynamic engine andtransmission mounts mentioned earlier. thefront-to-rear weight distribution is 47-53. people ask me a lot ofquestions about
these reviews. no i don't keepall the tp, as many of you know, costcolets me borrow it. but i will stressthat martin campbell and i put long hoursand a lot of money into making these lookgood. i use five different kind ofcameras. we drove over 100 miles to getto this location so the car was in its"natural habitat". and then once we got there, patience was
required, as it often is.sometimes its very slow moving traffic thatholds us up, sometimes its just backgroundstuff. sometimes it's wind. also, onthis shoot, i had my first serious dronecrash. a huge gust of wind sent myphantom 4 into the power lines that ishouldn't have been close to. it fell from thisheight onto the pavement and survived (butdidn't record
the fall for some reason). iquickly checked it back at home found all wasright. surprisingly durable. there ya go gang. that is mytake on the 2016 mercedes amd gt s, a fastfine car if you can afford it. i know ican't because, i've quit my day job.yes, i have finally quit my job atking tv in seattle and i'm doing the carthing exclusively that means i havetime, finally,
for twitter and facebook. so iwill talk to you all day long on twitterand facebook, just look for drivencar reviews, not tom voelk, tomvoelk is my personal page, trying tokeep a separation between church andstate. but i will talk to you ondriven car reviews. all right?
